Overhead view of the 2 bottles:
After also taking pictures and measurements, I sent all the pictures and measurements to Doug. Doug then 2 about 2-3 weeks to carve up the stock and sent me some pics. During that conversation, he also asked me what all accessories that I wanted mounted/added to the stock and I was like a kid in a candy store. But I also am a simple kinda guy when it comes to guns and I don't care for the HEAVILY TACTICAL look. I asked for a weaver rail along with a swivel stud attached so I could mount a bi-pod. He also asked me if I wanted a fully adjustable mono pod installed in the pistol grip of the stock. Of course...........I DID! He also installed a rear swivel stud to the rear of the stock so I could later attach a sling if I deemed it necessary. Another nice feature he adds to this stocks is a recess grooved into the sides of the stock so when you shoot offhand, your fingers have extra grip in the recess. His butt pads come in just about any length that you can request up to a couple of inches thick. This adds in LOP for us longer armed guys. These stocks are made of POPLAR and are strong and light to boot.
Here are some pictures of the stock he came up with via my dimensions. A prototype if you will:
Doug Russell of MADDOG stocks did not disappoint.
So now back to the question of WHY a MadDog Stock if my gun already shoots so well. Well, Air force air guns are not perfect by any stretch and they are known to have flex at a few points along the action and frame. My gun has some rigidity bits built into it but it still doesn't remove ALL of the flex. 3 of the key areas are the breech area and the area behind the breech were the bottle attaches (bottle collar) and around the center of the frame. With the breech and collar area being the worse. Having a SOLID platform like the MD stock to attach to the action relieves a lot of this "FLEX". It's like pillar bedding a bolt action rifle if you will. It makes the Airforce gun LESS hold sensitive and allows you to shoulder and squeeze the stock and NOT the airgun itself. This feature alone is a God send and will help tremendously. If you note closely, when i remove the shoulder plate from the rear of the bottle, my original LOP is slightly affected but that's a good thing anyways cause the dimension is well within my COMFORT range. I've practiced HOLDING the gun with the stock and its feel and dimensions are right on point. I could not be happier.
I can not wait to get the stock mounted and test this puppy out at the range. Everything is looking very good so far..............................
PS........The stock will NOT be this color and finish....lol. It will be black................
PSS......Now that Doug has my bottles dimensions and his stock FITS that bottle, if you purchase a bottle like mine (more shot) then he will already have the master setup and your stock will be ready (fitment trouble free) to make and ship just like the standard stock that fits the OEM AirForce bottle.
STAY TUNED!

That's Bitchin! I've literally been up in the air with what I want to do eventually about an adaquate air source. I had obtained a 4500 carbon fiber tank. The advantage was that it is similiar enough dimension to fit the Ultima MadDog stock. The disadvantage is that the VOLUME is still the same. Without regulator no greater shot count!
ReplyDeleteI really wanted to be able to bulk up my air AND use a MadDog stock!
Looks like its coming around,,,, of course anything can be done for a price! At least now that price is within the same reach as it is to just reach for a pattern or blank off the shelf!
What is the maximum rated pressure on that Catalina Tank? Is it still semi-readily available?
That could be a problem trying to produce an off the shelf stock for an unconventional setup. Unless they were to offer a complete premium stock/air reservoir system. Just add your own valve? Sounds like an expensive niche product, but would serve my needs nicely.
I kept telling myself that I would take it easy and build my gun piecemeal as I could afford and budget for it... "well if wishes were horses beggars would ride" Basically if ya want it, ya just gotta do it! Didn't take my addictive personality long at all.... I am nearly fully outfitted. I am still on a spinlock tank with only a few shots or on the bench tethered to scuba. My Condor build/conversion is every bit of accurate as I could have hoped for,,,, but it doesnt shoot itself. Its definately an effort and practiced method to get good with this gun. It doesnt come naturally. I got it fairly down now,,, I dont doubt that I could put fifty to a hundred rounds into one inch group at a hundred yrds, but it gets old fast. I get fatiqued if I shoot this gun too long. Its hold sensitive similiarly like a springer. I ponder if perhaps the combination of heavier spring and hammer contribute to that too.
I have very high hopes for the MadDog and am following your blog on the edge of my seat, waiting to hear if it works for you as great as I hear from others! Knifemaker swears by it, maybe your experience will be just the motivation to make me just do it too!
Now what else was left ????? Oh yeah, casting gear! I swear, just the casting gear and I will be done!
Well I can wish about some things,,, I will quit tomorrow.
